Geology

3000,000,000 Years Of Erosion

East Lothian’s landscape is shaped by dynamic geological forces – a coastline carved by the tide, volcanic eruptions, and the slow, unyielding movement of ice. From the dramatic cliffs of Tantallon Castle to rolling farmland beneath the Garleton Hills, every feature tells part of a story millions of years in the making.

There’s plenty to discover in our Geology exhibit with quizzes, videos and explanations of how our entire coastal landscape was formed. Come and meet our friendly volunteers and learn where Limestone, Sandstone, Red Phonolite and Bluestone (amongst many other rock types) can be found in our Coastal Ward.
